Thing 4

Things have changed tremendously since I was in high school. I learned to type on a manual typewriter, and everything came out of a book. It was lecture, note taking, followed by memorizing then tests and quizzes to determine what you know. Today information is available to anyone, anywhere in several media options. The advances in technology have snowballed, and are picking up speed. It is so important for teachers to utilize new technology in the classroom to relate to our digital natives. However it is even more important for schools to inservice all of their staff, and give them the skills they need to produce effective employable products of society. Industry is moving on with high technology the schools need to keep up so that companies remain here and can have qualified employees here and not have to go overseas to get qualified help. In todays world its not just what you know but what you can figure out.

  1. Your last sentence points to the need for a fundamental change in how we teach our students. Students are always looking for the one "right" answer, but we don't live in a multiple choice world. We need to teach them how to figure stuff out, not how to memorize and repeat facts and figures.
